Physiological Performance Testing
VO2max Testing
VO2MAX refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense exercise. VO2MAX values vary between individuals, and are related to fitness, age, genetics, and sex.
This test will be performed on a treadmill or a cycle ergometer. The test will determine the participant’s cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. Upon completion of the test, the participant will be given his or her individual VO2MAX value.
Testing results include:
VO2MAX value
Aerobic and Anaerobic thresholds
Optimal heart rate training intensities
Lactate Testing
The lactate threshold (LT) is the point at which blood lactate begins to accumulate substantially above resting values during high intensity exercise. Lactate measurements are an important tool in determining when the participant shifts from using aerobic energy sources to anaerobic energy sources at higher exercise intensities.
This test can be performed either at the same time as the VO2MAX test or as a stand-alone assessment. Blood is taken from a small finger prick every 3-4 minutes throughout the test.
Test results include:
Determination of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds
Relationship of AT, LT to the VO2MAX value
Heart rate values related to specific training thresholds
Resting Metabolic Rate
Resting Metabolic Rate:
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) assessment calculates an individuals energy (calorie) use at rest. Testing is done with a metabolic cart, which measures the oxygen use and carbon dioxide production. This assessment provides an estimate of an individual's baseline caloric needs, as well as substrate utilization (i.e., proportion of carbohydrate to fat being burned) at rest.
